At that time many will fall away and will betray one another and hate one another
It is clear from this passage that in the events leading up to the return of Christ as coming King of the World, there will be a great falling away from the faith in Christ and God. People will give up on living God’s way. People will give up on trying to obey God and will instead go with the easy plan of following the world.
One of the distinguishing marks of the actual last days is this great falling away. Notice 2 Thessalonians 2:3 which says, Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction. There is going to be a great apostasy right before the coming of Christ. True Christians will become the real minority report. Those who pretended to be Christians before will abandon that charade. In the same way 1 Timothy 4:1 gives the same clue, But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
Jesus says to mark your calendars that before there can be a second coming there must be a significant falling away from the faith. That is the final generation.
