Breakfast With Jesus: 1 JOHN 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love

Conquer your fear with love

Many people see their dream opportunity in front of them but then turn away because of fear. They might fail. What if they are not up to the task? What if they are rejected? How do they know it will work this time? What if they are not ready? What if they freeze up? What if they run out of things to say? There are a hundred “what if’s” for all these scenarios.

Fear is the great enemy of progress. Everything you will ever accomplish for God will involve fear, but trusting in God will allow you to feel the fear and do it anyway. You and I must overcome fear with love, faith, and action. If we do not overcome our fear, we cannot move into the wonderful life God has planned for us.

Now there is a fear of the consequences of sin; we are not talking about conquering this fear. This is healthy fear which keeps us out of danger and devastation.

This verse of Scripture tells us that the way to conquer the fear is to focus on meeting the need. If you focus on the need, it will allow you to push through the fear. If we were to see a fire on the roof of a neighbor’s house, our clear view of their need would impel us to go knock on their door or even open their front door and declare that they needed to get out of the house. Our understanding of their need would allow us to overcome our fear of embarrassment and help them. In the same way, God places situations and people before us each day whose needs we clearly see and whose needs we can meet. We must embrace God and allow His love to flow through us to them and in this way overcome our fear.

There is no fear in love: Fear is the Greek word phobos, from which we get our word phobia. It means fear, terror, dread, or at times reverence. Each of us can be gripped by fear at the most bizarre times. We can become immobilized by the imaginations in our mind. This verse of Scripture gives us the solution to the grip of fear:  Love. When we are focused on meeting the need, there is no fear, there is only the need. It is the focus on need that allows us to overcome the fear of all that could go wrong and all of our inadequacies.

Love is like the light to fear’s darkness. Love drives fear away. They are mutually exclusive. To truly have one, denies the other the room to exist. Therefore God is saying that one does not fix fear by understanding it. One conquers fear by focusing on the needs and meeting them.

Love is the word agapao, which means to act sacrificially to meet needs, to pursue, to please another. It is the word most used to describe the love that God has for us. Love is not a feeling, but it usually produces a feeling in others. Love is a verb. Love is an action which accomplishes its goal.

Perfect love casts out fear. It drives it out like light drives out darkness. It leaves no room for the darkness. Fear will grip our soul with all kinds of invented scenarios and horrific possibilities. These fantasies and invented possibilities will begin to dominate our soul if we let them.
