Breakfast With Jesus: PSALMS 1:3 Part 2

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers

This is a very interesting promise that God declares about those who meditate on Him. They will fulfill their purpose at the right time. A fruit tree that is healthy and cared for produces its kind of fruit at the right time. There are times of dormant branches. There are times of blossoms but no fruit, and then there are times of ripening fruit.

David is picturing each of us as fruit trees that are supposed to produce a certain fruit at a certain time. We have a particular skill and a particular job that is supposed to be done at a particular time in order for the society to be maximally productive and for us to feel our value to the community. The great danger for a fruit tree farmer was if for some reason the fruit growing process was interrupted: a frost in the early season; a disease that attacks the tree or the fruit; animals that break or eat the blossoms; it could be bees that do not pollinate the trees; or an interruption in the water; it might be a destructive wind, rain, or snow at the wrong time.  These and many other things would keep fruit trees from producing fruit.  The promise here is an important one. David is saying that God will make sure that you get to make your contribution to the society and to your own life. Your life will have value because God will make sure that you get to produce that thing you do. Your life will not be derailed. Isn’t that good news?!

He is really saying that by mediating on God’s Word you will be protected from the outside negative agents. You will not make wrong choices to give them the opportunity to make headway. You will know to take the protective steps to allow you to do your thing. God will control the things you can’t control so that you get to do your stuff. Your value will be allowed to come out.

How tragic to watch people who waste their life because they have been sidetracked by relationships or drugs or alcohol or some other thing which does not allow them the opportunity to produce their unique contribution to the world. God is saying, through the mouth of King David, that you were made to produce something and if you meditate on the Scriptures, God will make sure that you get to do that. How tragic to be an apple tree that never gets to produce apples. Think through David’s life. He was the eighth son of Jesse from the tribe of Judah living in Bethlehem with no thought or opportunity to be a major leader of anything but with major leadership skills. But because he meditated on the Scriptures, God plucked him from obscurity and made him King over the whole nation and then gave him an enduring lineage. The record is clear that because David was a man after God’s own heart (he wanted to know how God thought and planned, so he meditated on God’s word), God selected him to be the next King over Israel. God will move heaven and earth to allow His servants who meditate on His Word to bring forth their talents and abilities.
